Aldershot Military Museum

Today we went to the Aldershot Military Museum to discover the history of the British Army in Aldershot. Its original beginnings were in the thousands of acres of Hampshire open moorland which proved ideal for the army training. An average soldier had about five hours of free leisure time so entertainment had to be found, and the surrounding area soon became a ‘Wild West’ filled with bars for the barracks. It wasn’t until 1954, 100 years after first being established, that Aldershot became known as the home of the British Army. The museum holds thousands of items that it has collected including an array of impressive guns, medals, and basic household items used in the barracks and on field action. The history of army uniform can be seen from early bright red tunics to today’s camouflaged dress.Access was good with ramps throughout.www3.hants.gov.uk/aldershot-museum
